Tomato Trellis Project

Epilogue 4 January 2026

Just as the new year’s seeds are being sown, a final taste of the final 2025 harvest has been preserved. Ninety-fours days after harvest those tomatoes have become chutney.

Just like this.

…. and it all boiled down to this.

Update 8 October 2025

A brief slideshow of the leaning tomato plants as of today.

30 September 2025

The leaning continues, temperature remain ideal, fruit is setting, and we’re starting to see more color.

Vines have grown 10 – 12 feet in length. About 1/2 of the length is trailing on the ground & 1/2 is being kept in easy reach and is beginning to produce fruit. Each plant is currently trained to have 2 to 3 developing ’suckers’ in addition to the main apex, or terminal bud, of a plant’s main stem.

Update August 8, 2025

The bed was replanted with two varieties of large slicer, indeterminate tomatoes on July 21; Azoycha & Better Boy.

19 days later they have grown out the substantially, they are being trained on strings, flowers are pollinating and the forecast is favorable.

The Azoychka Tomato is a highly productive Russian heirloom that produces good yields of smooth, sweet and citrusy tomatoes that weigh 10-16 oz. each. Slightly oblate with a yellow-orange flesh and a delicious flavor. This tomato variety does well throughout the United States.

Better Boy produces large red fruit that can weigh up to 16 oz. each and is heat-tolerant making it a great choice for growers in warmer climates.
